EzyVegies Demonstration Garden - Autumn Update

22-May-2010

Great Autumn conditions in Sydney have helped to produce some beautiful organic vegetables. Our silverbeet, lettuce, rocket, parsley and marigolds have grown rapidly. In the case of the lettuce, growth was a bit too rapid. Our new demonstration garden captures sun from 11am to 3pm and is completely sheltered from all wind. As a result, the lettuce bolted after 6 weeks of near summer temperatures on the ground.

The warm conditions also hampered our cabbage and broccoli through a late outbreak of caterpillars. Normally, we’d simply control the caterpillars with Pyrethrum or Dipel, but 14 days at the Sydney Royal Easter Show was enough time to grow some very fat caterpillars. Organic gardening can be a ruthless business, so we squashed the guilty caterpillars, removed the shredded cabbage and broccoli plants, and started again. There’s no point being sentimental!

Our second rotation has also been planted in a 5m x 1m raised garden bed. It includes lettuce, silverbeet, spinach, rocket, parsley, coriander, broccoli, cabbage, kale, marigolds and Queen Anne’s Lace. It’s still warm, so we’ll need to keep an eye on the caterpillar population.
